Does COVID19 cause hair loss ?

Yes, COVID-19 has been associated with hair loss in some cases. While hair loss is not a direct symptom of the virus itself, it can occur as a result of the physiological and psychological stress caused by COVID-19 infection. Here are a few key factors related to COVID-19 and hair loss:

Telogen Effluvium: Telogen effluvium is a form of temporary hair loss that can be triggered by physical or emotional stress, including illness. It occurs when a large number of hair follicles enter the resting phase (telogen) prematurely, leading to increased shedding. COVID-19, as a significant stressor, can contribute to the onset of telogen effluvium, resulting in noticeable hair loss within a few months after the infection.

Post-Infection Recovery: Recovering from COVID-19 can be a physically and emotionally taxing process. The body's resources are focused on combating the virus and healing, which may cause temporary disruptions in the hair growth cycle. As a result, hair shedding or thinning may occur during the recovery phase.

Psychological Impact: COVID-19 has brought about significant psychological stress due to factors such as social isolation, fear, financial strain, and uncertainty. Psychological stress is known to contribute to hair loss conditions like telogen effluvium and exacerbate other forms of hair loss, such as alopecia areata or trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder).

Fever and Illness: In some cases, high fever or severe illness associated with COVID-19 can induce physiological stress on the body, which can disrupt the hair growth cycle and potentially lead to hair loss.

It's important to note that not everyone who contracts COVID-19 will experience hair loss, and for many individuals, any hair loss experienced is typically temporary. In most cases, the hair will regrow naturally as the body recovers from the illness and stress subsides. However, if you are concerned about hair loss or experiencing prolonged or severe shedding, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or dermatologist who can evaluate your specific situation and provide appropriate guidance or treatment options.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress levels, and practicing good hair care can also contribute to promoting hair health during and after the recovery period.
